This presentation resonates with me a great deal. By my early 30’s (I am now 71) my stuttering had become such a serious problem at work that my financial survival was in jeopardy. I recognized that “I had to do something”, so I read widely and deeply, including medical journals, and learned that some physicians had found by accident or trial-and-error that certain medications helped some adult stutterers. To make a long story short, I used that information and “became my own doctor”, and found that a combination of Prozac and Clorazepate greatly helped me. (Had Paxil been available then, I would have taken it instead of those two meds). I later recognized that I was suffering from ptst early trauma and 1,000 cuts trauma. The meds I was taking were in reality treating not only my stuttering, but those mental conditions as well. The second half of my life has been much better than the first half. I greatly wish that I had recognized my problem earlier and taken action then. WARNING: Clorazepate has a sedative effect, and I once fell asleep while driving on an interstate at 70mph and was almost killed. I had a second traffic accident that could have ended badly, but did not.

For many people who stutter, probably the majority in the case of men, stuttering creates even more difficulty in employment than in our personal lives. And the job interview is often one of the most difficult aspects. I don’t know what to say here. I do know that even within the same occupation, companies differ one from another in the degree to which communication is verbal. Perhaps try to find a company in which the verbal communication is less than the others. Another strategy is to “get your foot in the door” by becoming an intern or contractor. The benefit of this is that the company can then see with its own eyes “what you can do”. This may be more important than you realize; a company is taking a big chance anytime it hires someone it has not worked with before in some capacity, and may reason “the devil you know is better than the one you don’t know”.

Great to hear your story, Jia! I had a similar experience while attending UT @Austin. I had to present results of a team project. I only had 3 minutes and it took me 1.5 minutes just to say my name. This was before the effective speech therapy I took in 1988.

If they do, I would tell her what a stutter is and why you do. And then make sure your children follow their passions regardless of the stutter.

I had a homie that had a serious stutter. Since my grandma was old school she gave him several phases to say. It helped him out a lot. My other homie grandpa called him Stutter box . He is a good friend and he's married with kids. 😊 I always waited for the thought to be complete.

I stutter too guys. The key is to let them know early on that you have stuttering. This reduces the anxiety because you're no longer hiding it. Please, you have to go and approach random people. Tell them you want to work on your social skills and if they don't mind having a short conversation. Trust me guys - get out there and build up your confidence. Oh, and MOST people don't even care - you'd become likable instantly for being honest.

Be straight forward honest and direct. The only person we can control is ourselves. If they don’t want to deal with it then move on. Id rather have it end quickly then having it drag out.
